Since today is the first day of the College Crossroads Blog, and it is also Veteran’s Day, it is fitting to pay tribute to the men and women of our armed services who protect our freedom to even pursue a college education to begin with. It is important for college students to remember that some of their classmates from high school may not be carrying a book bag across campus, but a rifle across a battlefield far away from home.

Unfortunately, not all men and women in uniform come home alive. But there are organizations like Folds of Honor that step up and answer the call to duty and patriotism, and try to raise scholarship dollars so that the children of our fallen heroes can pursue a college education of their own, despite having a parent severely wounded, or killed in action.

I have helped thousands of families plan for college and retirement over the years, but as the son, brother and uncle to three veterans, and a friend to many more, I feel one of the best ways I can pay tribute to veterans is to help the children of those veterans who have fallen or been wounded. My expertise is in college and retirement planning, but you can help out veterans in many ways.

For example, Saturday, December 11th, in Charlottsville, Virginia, a group of citizens led by founder Michael Kaminski, a Merrill Lynch advisor and a veteran himself, are holding the Freedom 5K Run to benefit veteran families and raise scholarship dollars. Major Ed Pulido, US Army, Retired, who was severely wounded by an IED while serving in Iraq, will be the guest speaker.
